consumer reports highest rated general purpose laptop is the dell e1505. they also recommend the e1501 as a budget laptop and the e1705 as a desktop replacment. i had a dell at work and it was solid. i have an hp now because of a good deal at best buy. it’s a good but not quite as good as the dell. you’ll pay a bit more for a dell.
if not dell, then stick with toshiba or hp. sony machines have a good rep but they’re a bit pricey, in my view.

gato
I recieved a Dell Inspirion 1501 for Christmas and it works great. I use iTunes, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and have a wireless internet connection that is fast and works great. Dell computers have changeable memory if needed to store more stuff, and it has a wireless broadband card slot and came with a DVD/CD Burner for only a little bit more.
I have had zero problems and it runs smooth as silk.
If you go another way though, try an Acer or an HP.
dells are great for internet and media if all your using it for is pics and music and reports and internet you only need a basic dell laptop but if your using it for movies and gaming get a mid to high range dell hope this helps mssg me if it doesnt
all regular comps with windows will be the same but if you want a computer with no viruses or errors get a mac
Dell notebooks are nice they are simply the best, I have an E1705, they are intuitive, for you I recommend either the E1501 or E1505. they are more portable/mobile than the 17" E1705. They have outstanding displays,HDD’s,speed, and most of all reliability. If you go to Epinions.com, they are the highest rated computers.
We’ve had good luck at our office with Dell laptops. Thumbs up here.
