I bought a used Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop and when I power it up it has only one user that is password protected. The person I bought it from cannot be reached, does anyone know how I can bypass this problem? I need pretty exact directions as this is my first laptop. THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!

try starting the computer in safe modem and removing any passwords from there. While restarting the computer press F8 continually to boot up in safe mode. If you can log in safe mode then open the control panel and from classic view choose User Accounts. Manage the Accounts from there you solve your problem.
Here is a link that might help you more http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321305
And another link for your specific model http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?journalid=64F9EB72ADA4D69EE040AE0AB8E155D4&docid=331244
If Windows will load to the user password, just erase the hard drive and start afresh. Did the laptop come with re-install media? If so, then you can easily erase the hard drive, if not, then maybe you should check out linux and install that on there (it’s a free operating system). If going the linux route, check out Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntu.com
If the password is in the BIOS (before Windows loads up), then you will have a little more difficulty. However, it sounds like you have the Windows password issue.
If it’s windows xp, boot into safe mode by pressing f8 on startup of computer then login as administrator. Should be able to remove password while logged in as admin through control panel -> users
