1. Hook both Macs to the Router.
2. On one Mac, go into System Prefs -> Internet & Networking -> Sharing -> Services.
3. Click Personal File sharing "On".
4. Click "Start".
5. Take note of the IP address following the "afp://", in the lower portion of the window.
6. On the other Mac, Pull the Go menu down to "Connect to Server".
7. Enter the IP address into the field. Click the "+" button to add it to favs.
8. Click "Connect".
9. Click "Registered User".
10. Enter the Account name & password of the account running on the other Mac.
11. Click Connect. Wait for it. It may take a bit to "Authenticate".
12. Select the item you want to access.
13. Click OK.
14. It should mount on the Desktop.

Target Disk Mode, see:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583

No Security risk in either from the outside. In Target Disk mode, you're treating your startup drive as an external drive. Don't mess with things you shouldn't mess with.

Hope this helps.
