I am buying a new internal hard drive for my dell laptop. Do I need to buy one from dell for my computer?

Make sure that the drive you are buying is the same type (i.e. if your drive is IDE, do not buy SATA and other way round).
Apart from that any drive of the same form factor (i.e. 2.5 inch common for laptops) will be OK.
Note: you might need to take your current drive out of the caddy and put the new drive in that caddy instead (some laptops do not use caddies, others do)…

No Dell hard drives come from a different set of suppliers, such as Hitachi and Fujitsu. They usually have a carriage adaptor that you will need to remove from your old hard drive, so the plug in works.
No you do not. As long as the new hard drive uses the same connection type you will be fine.
If you have a newer computer (made within the last 3-4 years) chances are you have a SATA (serial ATA) hard drive. In that case another SATA HDD will work fine.
