I bought a used Dell Laptop Latitude E4200 and I can’t defragment the drive?

A message pops up saying I have to be an administrator to perform this function. Is there anyway to add myself as an administrator or a way to get around this? It has Windows Vista if that helps. I have no idea how to find the person I bought the computer from – it was one of those church garage sales. I got a fantastic deal on it but now ??????????? Thanks for your help.

Steve:
1. Click Start > Control Panel > User Accounts
.
2. The resulting window will show which "user" you are logged in as and the level of your privileges
.
3. If it shows that you are logged in as an Administrator, use the change password link and SET A PASSWORD! This will prevent anyone from doing harm with administrator privileges if they log on under your account.
.
4. You can defrag by right-clicking ‘Defrag’ and choose run as administrator.
.
Now if it asks for the old password (which of course you don’t have) then choose the "create a password reset disk" and follow the instructions. But be careful – anyone could use this disk to change the passwords.
.
When you’re done with these processes, then set up another user account with "Standard User" privileges for anyone to use to protect your computer. If you need more help, just holler!
.
Good luck!
Nancy
Download an aftermarket defragmenter from download.com. you should be able to get a free trial of some and choose the one you like best, or even find a free one that suits your needs,
In vista you can right click a program & click run as administrator.
But thats not the point you need to make yourself administrator sooner or later.
