I want to buy a laptop, but I don’t know where to start as far as brand, size, durability, etc?

I’m going off to college in september and want a laptop. I don’t have much money, because most of it will go to college, but I’m willing to spend enough to get a decent laptop. I’m completely lost when it comes to what kind to buy. I’m used to windows, because that’s what i’ve grown up with, but someone told me apple is better. Advice!??

Well, I would look at HP, Toshiba or Apple.
HP in general have a decent build quality and can last a fairly long time.
Toshiba also have a great build quality, and are quite cheap. Look for the satellite series because that seems to be the cheapest.
Apple is the most durable (aluminum frame) with the best battery life and has the least amount of problems, however for an equivalent Windows notebook, it costs around $300-$400 more and certain Windows applications may not run on a Mac.
If you’re looking for a good notebook, have a look at it’s durability, weight (stay under 2.8Kg if possible, it starts getting annoying after that), battery life (you will want at least 2 hours and preferably 4 or more), a Core2Duo Processor (they are the most efficient, from best to worst in efficiency it goes C2D, CoreDuo, Celeron, DualCore), at least 1Gb of memory and if you can find one, get a dedicated graphics card (just in case you want to play a game or two, but this is not that necessary).
I don’t recommend Dell because they have a poor build quality and prone to screwing up.
I would not recommend an Apple for going to college. Many of our professors would have us use some free program or another for a class, and if it doesn’t work on the Mac, you’d be in the computer lab. Most everyone in our college would end up getting a Windows PC even if they had a Mac coming into school. Even the Linux users fared better than the Mac ones. It just isn’t worth it in an environment where there are many networks, many different programs temporarily used, needing to work in teams and such… Especially if you are not strong in working on the computer and troubleshooting problems yourself, it would get in the way of many of these things. The Windows one will behave as expected, with any of the instructions they give to everyone, should run what teachers expect you to run, and will be easily worked on by any tech people there if you have a problem.
I have family who are pretty happy with their HPs. My Vaio is okay. I had a Compaq once that I did not find very reliable.
For the most part though, you’ll need to decide what you can afford, how nice a computer you need and then start searching. The prices change frequently, so it’s worth taking your time and looking around. HP often seems to run specials which are very good, allowing you to get a bit more computer for your dollar.
I’d go with apple if I could. Otherwise, Toshiba because the hardware is nice. The virtual memory used in most other laptops bites IMO.
Also, Apple’s just great because Windows sucks so bad. All of the headaches that Windows gives from incompatibility issues to random crashings really makes me wish I had a Mac. I used one for work once. I think one bug showed up in about a 6 month period. And it was minor and nothing to even mention compared to the kind of crap windows puts me through.
MAC MAC MAC!!!! seriously i bought a mac when i started college and it lasted 5 years without ever crashing or getting a virus or spyware. They are just so much less maintenance than other computers. Once you go mac, you never go back!
+++ and i never had any compatibility problems either…almost every windows program has a mac equivalent.
call dell they are great
apple is better as faras protecton goes…not many viruses on apple computers, i personally would go with gateway though their laptops are durable and their support is great…

to give u more advice on which model to pick i would need more information on what u will be doing on it?? surfing the web, photos video, etc….
HP is a good brand, and when it comes to price they are pretty good. Dell is ok to, but they are a bit more expensive I find.
in my experience HP has always been the best computers to buy. next to toshibas. avoid eMachines at all costs. they only last about 3-4 yrs and then die.
Greetings, I have a Dell Inspiron myself and its great. It’s quiet and never gets hot. This site has a deal for a brand new Dell for $280, it’s worth a look. http://superdupermarket.com Good luck with whatever you find!
