I just bought a laptop. A used Apple Ibook. It does not come with an airport card, whatever that is, so i know i need to buy one. Can someone tell me how to get wireless internet on it? I have no clue what routers are or anything about them, so please break it down into baby steps. I have a desktop and have cable internet, but i want wireless internet on the laptop. How do I do that and about how much is it going to cost? Thanks
so the wireless router can hook up to the box that my cable internet is connected to?
the processor is
PPC G3 366MHz
if that helps..

Go to the apple website and take a look a the users manual for the airport base station extreme.
You can buy one from ebay for like $115 with free shipping. I bought mine over a year ago. Great investment.
Once you get the router.(this one or another brand) follow these steps to setup your router.
Connect the ethernet/internet cable from your modem to the WAN port on your router (its the only one with a different symbol above it the others are LAN ports).
Next use another ethernet cable to connect your PC to the LAN port on the router. Now log into the router to set it up. (See users manual how to log in depends on which router you buy.)
Once logged in you have to setup the internet connection. Use DHCP if you have a cable connection and use PPPoE if you have a DSL connection. If you use DSL you have to enter the info that was given to you by your internet provider.
Next you have to setup your wireless network.
Give your wireless network a name (also known as SSID) , network password, set security/encryption to WPA or WPA2. Set channel to Auto. Turn off any MAC address filtering, Turn off any port forwarding. Set channel to Auto. Save and exit. The password keeps others from using you internet for free and keeps your info safe from identity theft.
Disconnect the ethernet cable from your laptop. Click on the network icon on the bottom right of the task menu on your screen. Select your network. You may be prompted to enter the network password to access your network.
Hmm… you might want to consider having someone like Geek Squad set up your wireless network for you. Anyway, you’d need to buy a router and a wireless card for your home and laptop respectively, install them, and then connect them together.
What a router is is basically like the base station for a cordless phone.
It is just a device that sends out a signal.
Since you already have Cable internet, and your Ibook comes with an Airport card, all you need to do is buy a wireless router and hook it up to your cable modem.
From there, directions that come with the router will guide you in how to connect.
It is not a difficult procedure, so do not be worried.
Routers can run anywhere from $40 to $100US, and will allow you to use your internet anywhere in your house and around your yard. Usually within 100ft from the router.
Well, if it’s a mac (Which I would have recommended) than it’s built right in, but you have to get a router. Most laptops are built in with WI-FI though, so all you probably need is a router, which is a whole other subject. But than you hook that up and your ready to go! Your computer should detect the network.
Good Luck!
With cable internet, they usually supply you with a modem to hook to your PC. I would recommend purchasing a Linksys wireless router (they’ve got a good one that’s about $50 and then prices go up from there). You can pick a wireless router from Wal-mart, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. I’m not sure how much the wireless card is from Mac, but you’ll need to purchase either the Airport card or a wireless pci card that is compatible with a mac (if it has pci slots, not sure if it does). Been a while since I had to purchase a wireless card so I’m not sure what they cost.
