Used Dell LaptopsOk, I am a comparative newbie to the computer world and a definate novice to the Apple. Am looking at getting a laptop for my personal use and for the kids to get comfortable with using an Apple and a PC. Have been to the Apple store in our local mall to look a bit. This will not be used for games (much) just personal web surfing, some finances, photos and other basic stuff. Any suggestions on what model to buy? How do you feel about refurbished models for Apple? Extended warranties worth it? Please not too technical and thank you for your help

I use Photoshop, MS Office, database softwares like Filemaker, Pagemaker, some home video editing, some games (not the heavy ones like some diehard gamers do), surf the internet for about 6-8 hours, download pictures, music and video. So which should I buy a Mac or a PC; a desktop or a laptop? WHY?
I have other considerations besides the OS (I’ve had experience with both Mac OS and Windows) like hardware durability, compatibility with external devices like handycam, digital camera, mp3 players, etc.
Please suggest a specific brand and model.

2 Laptops seem rather decent to me
and the laptop’s ability to play games (e.g. N64 Emulators and games like Halo and Oblivion) is pretty much the deciding factor between these computers. That and overall function.
The first laptop which I am leaning towards is a
HP Dv5000 LAPTOP(intel 1.7 dual pro, 2g ram, 80g, 256m graphic card)
The guy is asking 0 for this
Is this a good deal?
Its used but in good condition.
Also this guy will apparently install Norton Anti virus for a year
Which I told him sure
Even though I pay for McAfee
Also there is another laptop
which is a
DELL LATITUDE D600 1.6GHZ 1024MB 40GB CDRW/DVD WIFI XP PRO LAPTOP
and 5 is being asked for this one
Which do you think is better?
Which do you think could play games the best?

I’m going to go to graphic arts, computer arts, and maybe a side of game creation but i have never bought a laptop in my life. My friend has been ranting how bad macs are and i kinda believe him. They seem to pass my budget of 2000 and all they can do is computer arts, i would have to buy vista separate for a extra 300 added to the price of 3200 of the mac which scares me if i have to get it. If i get a credit card and not get vista i wouldn’t be able to play any of my games or programs i have, but it runs photoshop a lot smoother then my friends pc and it looks nice, i was looking at a gaming computer as a alternative from other companies but my other friend who dose graphics design says I’m going to need one if i want to continue it into a career and it would be difficult just using a pc; she advises both mac laptop and pc desktop. Is their a cheaper alternative or should i just screw it and use the credit card?
I heard of mac having no virus problems but my pc has never had a virus problem before so im not concerned about that.

I’ll be using it at home for basic home use. Wireless is a must. I’ll be surfing the internet a lot. I will be using MS Money, Firefox and word processing. I also want to watch DVDs with it. No games, I have a desktop for that. What are the minimum specs that I should look for? Any other advice?

I bought a Dell laptop from Best Buy last October (bought it for about 0). Here are the things that is wrong with it: won’t connect to internet (it will connect but it needs to be plugged in), freezes if left for more than 5 minutes, randomly deleted one of the games that came with the computer, just has some random spastic issues such as the webcam flickering on for a moment and turning back off.
Since my computer is less than a year old, I feel like it can at least be salvaged for parts. Physically it is in great condition. I don’t want to take it somewhere to get it fixed because I don’t want to risk paying 0+ to get it fixed, get ripped off, and then have it still have some problems. I feel like this computer would be ideal for someone that likes to work with computers because they could mess around with it and probably fix it by themselves.
If nothing else, how much could I sell the "parts" for?
*Also, I’m planning on using Ebay, so I guess I’m wondering how much I should start the bidding price at.
