I can’t afford a brand new Apple laptop so I want to buy a used one. But I’ve never owned one before and I want to use it for graphic design and video/music editing for school. So could somebody please help me out with what are the essential components I’ll need to do this. IE: Amount of Ram, processor speed, video card etc. Again, I don’t need the best of the best. Just a starter Apple. Used, refurbished anything like that. I Can’t spend over 1k and would prefer to get by with something half of ,000. But don’t know if thats even possible. But I don’t need the best. Just something that gets me by. And besides ebay, where would be a good place to look. Also, what programs/software are a must for graphic design/video editing and sound editing.
I WANT AN APPLE. You’re not going to dissuade me from getting an Apple. I want an Apple, I’m getting an Apple. So please, help me figure out what I need IN an Apple that best fits my needs.

Used Apples are WAY overpriced. You can get a new Dell with a Core2Duo and 2GB of memory for the price of an outdated Apple laptop on eBay.
well if you could spend 1000k a new macbook is 1200 and they come with built in webcam, 1GB RAM, 150 GB HD, 15 inch screen, ilife(editing stuff)
Ok, here’s an answer without an agenda…
For the kind of editing you want to do you’ll need a Powerbook G4 (minimum 1GHz, 1.67GHz would be better). It needs to be a Powerbook (or a MacBook Pro, but they cost a lot) because the iBooks and regular MacBooks use built in video which works by sharing the system RAM (not a good thing for video editing)
Bottom line you need minimum:
PowerBook G4 (Titanium) 1GHz (no higher than $450)
768 Mb RAM
Better would be:
PowerBook G4 (Aluminum) 1.5-1.67 GHz (no higher than $650)
1Gb RAM

Video card will be an ATI radeon or rage, but laptop video cards aren’t upgradeable so you get what you get…
Your best bet for finding these is Craig’s list, that way you find one in your area and you can inspect it first.
For design software you’ll want:
Sound Studio Pro
Final Cut Pro
Adobe CS2
When searching out this software look for older versions (that’s why I specified CS2). The older versions will be optimized for use with the older machine you’ll be buying, they won’t cost as much, and you should be able to still do 99.9% of the stuff you can do with the latest versions.
I hate to say it but I sold my Powerbook 1.67GHz three weeks ago, sorry…
