If you were intending to be an engineering or computer science major, my answer would be different. A biology student really doesn’t need much beyond internet access, a word processor and spreadsheet software, based on my own experience.
As such, I’d say go with the standard Macbook. If you’re a movie buff, you’ll probably want one with a widescreen display. Doesn’t sound like you’re much of a gamer.
I will say that while iWork is okay, the Office suite would not be a bad investment. iWork can be a bit oversimplified. Also, I sometimes have issues with files that people send me that just don’t display properly in iWork.
With college being the once in a lifetime experience that it is, I’d also recommend a digital camera and memory card. It’ll give you the freedom to take as many photos as you want without a major cost issue. Just back them up periodically on a CD or DVD-rom. You should be able to find a cheap camera for under $100.
Also, a printer. For around $150, you can get a decent black laser printer, although you may want a color printer. It can make charts a bit easier to read. Whatever you choose, check the side of the box for the MacOSX logo. That means the printer will work with your computer.
Don’t forget ink/toner and paper. You never know when you’ll run out so bring an extra ink/toner cartridge.
