You get a $50 discount at the Apple education store. It has the speed, ram etc. that you need. It would be your minimum MacBook. If you have the money, move up to a new 15" MacBook Pro, it gives a bit better speed, etc. But unless you need the firewire capability & the larger screen you could spend the extra cost to get a larger hard drive on the MacBook & still have money left over. I got an iMac and a MacBook for a bit more than the cost of just the MacBook Pro. The MacBook Air is nice but it would serve best as a 2nd or 3rd Mac to have & just use it for travel. You are doing the right thing. I have also had a bad experience with pc's. So i think you should go for the MacBook. A new version has just come out. Which looks great. This costs $1299 but if you liked the last one then they are selling it off on the apple store website for $999.
